Our facts told us all about how people used to think that tomatoes were poisonous and only changed their minds once they started to understand more about the chemistry that was going on with the plates. 

That happens all the time in science, we develop a THEORY using the information we have at the time and when we get new information or evidence, we change our theory to fit it.
