Alchemy was the first chemistry. Before we knew much about how chemicals worked and why they behave like they do, alchemists were obsessed with making gold from cheap metals.

The first person to crack it would be rich beyond belief and so many people spent their whole lives trying. But they were never going to succeed because gold is an element and an element is something that cannot be made from anything else, it contains only 1 kind of ATOM.
